It was another rough night on Broadway Monday when another performer was injured during a preview of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. The musical, with music by U2's Bono and The Edge, has now had four incidences where actors have been injured doing stunts.
The show just recently rescheduled its opening four weeks to tweak the story and music; however, it's the aerial stunts that have been the most publicized problem with the show. On Monday night, about seven minutes before the end of the show, an actor doing an aerial stunt fell 30 feet off of a "bridge" into a pit. Audience members told the press that the actor playing Spider-Man (who may have been a stunt double, although everything is a bit hushed) and Mary Jane looked as if they were supposed to fall into the pit but the descent looked too fast. They then said that they could hear the actress screaming.
The show was stopped and paramedics were called who transferred the actor to Bellevue Hospital. He is reportedly under observation.
The show was stopped and the crowd ushered from the theater. Initially, it was announced that the show would go dark for an undetermined amount of time while the incident was being investigated by OSHA and other government agencies along with the Actor's Equity Association. It was later reported on Tuesday that new safety measures had been enacted and the show would resume on Wednesday night after cancelling the Tuesday night and Wednesday matinée performances.
Bono and the Edge have been working on the music remotely while U2 finishes the Australian leg of their 360 Degrees tour. It is said that they will be in the theater and working directly with director Julie Taymor starting right after the holidays to continue refining the music.
