Al Pacino is going to play the role of jailed producer Phil Spector in an upcoming film from HBO.
The film will be written and directed by Pulitzer Prize winning screenwriter, David Mamet (The Wicked Son, Wag The Dog) according to The New York Times.
It is not the first time the actor and director have worked together. In 1983, Pacino starred in Mamet’s play ‘American Buffalo’ on Broadway.
Spector made a name for himself in the late 50s and throughout the 60s producing artists with his signature “wall of sound”. He was behind the dials for iconic recordings such as ‘River Deep, Mountain High’ by Ike and Tina Turner, ‘You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling’ by the Righteous Brothers and ‘Da Doo Ron Ron’ by The Crystals.
He produced The Beatles’ final album ‘Let It Be’, which was a window into the world of rock music, where he would go on to produce The Ramones and Blondie.
On April 13, 2009 he was convicted of Murder in the Second Degree and using a firearm in the commission of a crime. He was given 19 years to life.
