Universal Music was the biggest music label of 2006, beating the other majors including the combined Sony and BMG figure.
Universal had a 31.61% market share for overall music sales for the year and also topped current albums with a 34.37% share, according to Nielsen SoundScan.Next was Sony-BMG with 27.44% of the overall market and 28.13% of current album sales. However, when broken down individually, Sony had a 15.49% share overall and BMG scored 11.95%.
In a broken down scenario, Warner Music Group was number two with a 18.14% share of overall albums and 16.85% of current albums.
EMI scored 10.2% of the overall market and 9.23% overall.
Other labels including indies combined had 12.61% of the overall share and 11.43% of the current album market.
