Mashups have long been a secret passion of mine. There is something about the well plotted, well ventured formula of taking two completely unrelated songs and, well, relating them.
From the moment Kylie Minogue played 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' to the tune of New Order's 'Blue Monday' at the Brit Awards in 2002, or if you want to delve further back in time, Beats International mashed S.O.S. Band's 'Just Be Good To Me' into The Clash's 'Guns of Brixton', I was hooked on the different combinations of artists that essentially highlight the point that good music transcends genres. So I my ears pricked up when I heard of another mashup of Jay-Z tracks, this time with the current kings (and queens) of shit in the indie world, Sleigh Bells.
The project was pieced together by a bloke named DJ O-Face. The idea might not be that original, after all, Jay-Z has been mixed in with The Beatles for the Danger Mouse-helmed 'Grey Album' (which was quickly snatched from circulation by the overlords of Apple Records) as well as the 'Collision Course' EP which saw Jay-Z and Linkin Park working in the studio together mashing up their own music, but it still appeals to my overdriven boyish excitement when I hear things coming together.
Are you as excited by the simple and unoriginal concept of mashups as I am? Well, you can hear this one for free by clicking over to this site.
