Sir Cameron Mackintosh has arrived in Melbourne for the Australian premiere of Mary Poppins and Tourism Minister Tim Holding came along to welcome Mary to town as well.
Mary Poppins will be one of the biggest stage productions ever mounted in Australia.12 months ago, Sir Cameron announced the Australian production in a satellite hook-up from New York.
Mary Poppins is based on the book by Australian author P.L. Travers and was made into a Walt Disney film starring Julie Andrews in 1964.
Cameron and Tim met with a sprinkling of Melbourne media this morning at Her Majesty's Theatre when the production will be held.
Verity Hunt-Ballard (Mary Poppins), Matt Lee (Bert), Philip Quast (Mr Banks) and Marina Prior (Mrs Banks) met Sir Cameron and the minister and took us all on a back-stage tour of the costumes.
Sir Cameron Macintosh is the man behind hundreds of productions including 'Cats', 'Les Miserables', 'The Phantom of the Opera' and 'Miss Saigon'.
He was knighted in 1996 for his services to British theatre.
Mary Poppins will premiere in Melbourne next Wednesday.
