Canadian indie darlings Arcade Fire put their money where their mouths are when it comes to Haitian earthquake relief.
The New York Times noted that the band used part of their recent set in Quebec to encourage their fans to donate to Haiti following the devastating earthquake in Port Au Prince in January.The band's co-leader Régine Chassagne emigrated from Haiti to Canada, and is now on the board of a non-profit aid organisation Kanpe.
She wrote an editorial in British newspaper The Observer following the earthquake and the band licensed a song for a Super Bowl commercial, with all the profits going to earthquake relief.
At the Quebec show, Cassagne's husband and co-leader of the band Win Butler announced a number to text which would donate $5 to the Kanpe non-profit, and said that Arcade Fire would match donations up to $1 million.
The band's hugely-anticipated third album, The Suburbs, will be released in the first week of August, so buying a copy should help the band raise even more money for the people of Haiti.
