Ringo Starr, known to the older generation as the drummer for The Beatles and to the younger generation as Thomas from Thomas and the Tank Engine, has turned 70 years old.
Ringo was the oldest Beatle. John Lennon would have been 70 in October. Paul McCartney turned 68 this year and George Harrison would have been 67.The Beatles drummer spent his 70th in New York City, the same city where he said he had his most magic moment back in 1964.
Ringo was the last Beatle to join the band. Original drummer Pete Best was fired after the release of the band's debut single 'Love Me Do' and before the first album 'Please Please Me'. On the single, Best plays drums but was replaced with Ringo by producer George Martin for the album version.
As a singer (and it was never his finest moment), he sang lead on Beatles songs 'Yellow Submarine', 'With A Little Help From My Friends', Octopus's Garden', 'Act Naturally', 'Don't Pass Me By' and 'What Goes On'.
He came into his own with his solo records, especially the 'Ringo' album in 1972 featuring appearances from all other Beatles, John, Paul and George and the hit song 'Photograph' he wrote with George.
His solo hits includes 'It Don't Come Easy', 'Back Off Boogaloo', 'You're Sixteen' and '"Oh My My'.
This year he released 'Y Not', his 15th studio album.
Happy birthday Ringo. Peace and Love!
