Courtney Love snarled her way through a 40-minute set in Austin last night with three guys who are not Hole.
What is she all about? I couldn’t work it out. The audience reaction was just as confused.Courtney and her non-Hole packed a capacity crowd and the people who couldn’t get in lined Sixth Street in Austin and watched through the window of the Dirty Dog Bar. However, this crowd was more like people who slow down for a car crash rather than real music fans.
Courtney Love is a celebrity of her own doing. She created her celebrity skin through her own antics and now has to act the role to keep the image going. She has turned herself into a human punchline.
Non-Hole came on stage at around 1.20am. Courtney snapped at the audience “I’m doing this for me, not for you. If you like it great, if you don’t, suck it.” Is she kidding? Is she acting? It’s hard to tell. Whatever the answer, if you aren’t doing it for the fans, Courtney, stay at home and sing into a hairbrush in front of a mirror.
This was indeed a crazy, mixed up show. She was all over the shop. The recorded version of the new single ‘Skinny Little Bitch’ sounds great. The live version was a complete mess.
She had some interesting cover songs, I’ll give her that. ‘Sympathy For The Devil’ didn’t work, but like I say it was interesting. ‘Bette Davis Eyes’ likewise was an interesting choice.
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson were watching in the wings. Everyone wants to see Courtney even if they don’t want to hear her.
Her parting words were “You were a terrible audience” as she stormed off stage and straight to the bar for a beer. Courtney Love draped over a bar at 2 o’clock in the morning was a performance all to itself.
Based on last night’s performance, this edition of Hole looks like it can only end in tears.
