Ruby Hunter, a pioneer Aboriginal singer and songwriter, has died at her home in Central Victoria.
Ruby was an inspiration for Paul Kelly and during her career has sung with Bob Dylan.She was born in 1955 of Ngarrinderjeri Aboriginal nationality. Ruby was part of the Stolen Generation, the generation of Australian children forcibly moved by the Australian Government in the 50s and 60s. Ruby was 8-years old when she was taken from her family.
Since the age of 16 she has been with her partner, singer and songwriter Archie Roach.
Ruby wrote ‘Down City Streets’, one of the stand-out tracks on Archie’s 1990 ‘Charcoal Lane’ album and released her debut album ‘Thoughts Within’ in 1994.
Ruby also acted in the movie ‘One Night The Moon’ and performed alongside Archie Roach and Paul Grabowsky in ‘Ruby’s Story’, the musical story of her life.
