Not Too Old To Dance - "Leave your inhibitions at the gate"

Young or old – we've all read the story of Richard Fuller, who a court ruled "Too Old To Dance" at a Cold Chisel concert in 2011, but what is Mr Fuller up to now? He's getting ready to attend the concert he inspire – The second annual "Not Too Old To Dance" concert in Townsville this Saturday.

Undercover FM managed to interrupt Kevin Borich from his rehearsal and catch up with him for a quick chat. Borich is passionate about the event and started by telling us that he’s not too old to dance!

“I just thought it was such a terrible story that some guy who was probably my age was almost prosecuted. I just couldn’t believe that, that happened and I think it’s a great title for people like me to latch onto because it seems like once you get further down the track you’re not supposed to have fun and you’re not supposed to let yourself go and go with the music. I’ve been a musician for all my life and love people getting up to dance. The older they are the better, I feel really good when older people get up and dance to my music. I thought what a great cause.”

His participation in the concert was inspired be his belief that everyone should be allowed to have a good time.

“I think Not Too Old To Dance is important globally – I think when you have children and they see you having a bit of fun they say ‘come on, you can’t do that’ it’s like you’re not supposed to be able to let yourself go. It’s also very healthy to get your body moving and really sort of getting out of your head and into your body. I’ve written a song actually, my wife helped me write it and it’s going to be on my new album, it’s called ‘Get Out Of Your Head And Into Your Body’ and it’s kind of about letting go and not worrying about who is watching and just listening to the music and letting it get into your body. You just move however you like – there’s no stereotype of what you should do, just let it hang out and have fun you know.”

Borich was unaware that this year Not Too Old To Dance has removed its ‘over 40’ age restriction, however he was excited that they had.

“It’s great to have everybody – all ages! It’s great to see young people having fun with older people. There shouldn’t be any barriers; older people have got a lot of wisdom – more so than younger people and it’s great when you see them working together. It’s great when you’re young and you have a grandfather who shares time with you. There’s wisdom in age.”

He’s hoping, despite the concept of the concert that there will be a varied crowd.

“I’m hoping to see a really good mix, I hope it’s families. Hopefully younger people come along to see how we do it. I’m 66 this year in October and I’ve been playing music all my life and it’s not a thing you stop because of your age – you love doing what you do and who’s to say that you’re too old to do it? If you can still do it and you still have fun doing it – well keep playing or keep dancing. It’s a release, its good health.”

Unfortunately if you’re expecting some Kevin Borich originals – that won’t be the case. However you can expect something a little bit more creative – The Souper Group!

“The band is lots of different people from different bands and it’s called the souper group – spelled S-O-U-P because it’s like a big soup! We are all in the soup and everyone is bringing different songs. Everyone’s had a few hits so we’re going to play them and we’re going to play a few favourites of other peoples in between. We want people to dance – so we want people to know the songs. Some people who don’t know the songs sort of don’t want to get onto it.”

The Souper group consists of Feat. Angry Anderson (Rose Tattoo), Mark Gable (The Choirboys), Kevin Borich (The La-De-Da’s, The Party Boys, The Kevin Borich Express), John ‘Swanne’ Swan, Izzy Osmanovic (The Screaming Jets, Judge Mercy), Harry Brus (Renee Geyer, Australian Crawl, Leo Sayer, The Kevin Borich Express), and Mick O’Shea (Rose Tattoo, Billy Thorpe, The Angels)

For those of you who do think that they ARE too old to dance Borich had this to say:

“I think they’re young in the head, I think it’s discrimination – I think they should let everyone have fun. Who are they to say they’re not allowed to have fun because they’re getting on in years? They should be champing them and saying ‘yeah, let you go, have some fun and get down with that rhythm’. We can all dance no matter how old we are!”

As for what you can expect this weekend Borich says “leave your inhibitions at the gate”

Fans of The Kevin Borich Express can expect a new album of original material out late November. To keep up to date with Kevin check out his website - www.kevinborich1.com.

“People can go there and see what I’m up to, get on my mailing list and I can let them know where I’m playing and there’s T-shirts and CDs and DVDs, I’ve got two DVDs out and my new album should be out soon.”
