Lil’ Band O’ Gold was the surprise of the Blues and Roots Festival in Byron Bay for 2010.
Described as a Louisiana supergroup, the band comprises of the cream of session musicians from The South. 73-year old Warren Storm is on drums. He formed his first band in 1956. Accordion player Steve Riley is a Grammy nominated musician via his Cajun band Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys. The “kid” in the band is 39-year old C.C. Adcock who has had two solo albums to his name and has appeared on albums by the Mamou Playboys and Ani DiFranco.
The album ‘The Promised Land’ is an Australian only release via Dust Devil Music. It is self-described as “a swamp pop journey”. ‘The Promised Land’ is equal parts Zydeco, Swap, Cajun and Blues/Rock in sound. If you are a fan of Little Feat, this is like the Little Feat Big Band.
The Lil’ Band O’ Gold feels is set from track one with ‘Spoonbread’, pulling in doo-wop sounds bred only in Louisiana.
‘Hallelujah I’m A Dreamer’ is the southern soul song on the record but the really interesting track is the cover of Electric Light Orchestra’s ‘Hold On Tight’, done Zydeco.
From being a little bit rock and roll, Lil’ Band O’ Gold goes a little bit country on ‘Hard Enough’. ‘Memories’ sounds like it was channelled right out of the 50’s.
The great thing about Lil’ Band O’ Gold’s ‘The Promised Land’ album is that every song is a new musical experience.
